Building Teams Starts with Listening
One of the most overlooked responsibilities of leadership is truly building a team. Not just hiring one. Not just managing one. But building one, intentionally, thoughtfully, and with care.
That starts with listening.
When leaders create an environment where people feel safe to tell the truth about their challenges, goals, and motivations, they unlock something powerful: alignment. When individuals are understood and supported in aligning their goals with their strengths, engagement and performance rise naturally.
Too often, companies promote individuals into leadership roles because they’ve “earned it” or because it seems like the next logical step. But leadership is not a reward, it’s a responsibility.
If someone pursues leadership for the title, prestige, or control rather than the desire to grow others, the impact can be costly. You risk underdeveloping your teams, creating disengagement, and losing your best talent to competitors who invest in their people.
The best leaders don’t just talk about accountability and results. They create environments of trust where people can be honest about what's working, what’s not, and what they aspire to. That's where real growth happens — for individuals and for the business.
At Vetta Sales Consulting in partnership with Aptive Index, I often remind clients that team health is not a soft skill. It's a growth strategy. The data proves it, but more importantly, people feel it.
If we want to build organizations that thrive in 2026 and beyond, we must lead with empathy, curiosity, and courage, and listen to the people we’re trusting to carry the mission forward.
