I love seeing my friends and their families killing the race circuit. I spent decades on that journey, knocking out 5 and 10 Ks on a monthly basis.
I no longer run.
I do work out every day (weights, Peloton, pilates, and more), but with the warmer temperatures, my distance on the city streets is, once again, adding up.
Walking the city streets, mile by mile, is its own special kind of magic. Some days it's a breezy 3-4 mile stroll made up of multiple mini walks, the perfect balance between fresh air, relaxation, and a bit of cardio. Other days, it stretches beyond 10 miles. Punctuated by trips to see sporting events, neighborhood dining, or city events. Transforming city sidewalks into a personal mini marathon dotted with coffee shops, park benches, and neighborhood smiles.
There's a rhythm to city walking, a pulse matched by footsteps tapping against pavement. Each walk serves a purpose: health, clarity, adventure, or simply guiding the pups through their important missions. It's exercise, therapy, and comedy rolled into one routine. You can find those green poop bags in nearly every pocket or bag I own.
Walking alongside your significant other is more than just moving together; it's a rhythm of connection, punctuated by real conversations, shared laughs, and yes, those perfectly timed dad jokes that break up the pace and lighten every step. These walks are the threads weaving a deeper bond, step by step, street by street.
And then, there's the canine crew. The delightful chaos on leashes. Conversations here become coaching sessions filled with firm yet loving reminders about manners, focus, and the not-so-subtle negotiations to ensure "mom" stays upright. After all, when your furry companions collectively outweigh you, each walk is an act of trust, balance, and gentle authority, especially with the sweet, slightly confused puppy whose boundless enthusiasm occasionally outpaces her ability to navigate city sidewalks.
But amid these playful struggles is pure joy, a shared experience of discovery and companionship.
City walking isn't just about steps counted or distances measured. It's about the journeys within those journeys: a living tapestry of health, connection, humor, patience, and love, one mile at a time. We are all focused on our business success, but don't forget about your personal health and joy. A happy, fulfilled person will be a better employee, leader, mentor, and connection. Lace them up and let's get going.
