Standing Tall: Lessons from My Favorite Animal

Updated: Mar 8, 2025

I have a weird attachment to giraffes.

I've loved them since I was a little girl, drawn to their elegance, height, and quiet strength. As I learned more about these majestic creatures, my admiration only grew. Over the years, friends, family, colleagues, and clients have gifted me paintings, carvings, and other works of art featuring giraffes. They fill my office and are a familiar backdrop in my video calls.

But why talk about this in a business setting?

Well, giraffes are fascinating creatures—not just for their beauty but for what they represent. They are the strongest female in the jungle, capable of defending themselves and their young with a powerful swing of their head. They walk with grace and confidence, standing tall even in the face of adversity. And perhaps most importantly, they have the biggest heart of any land mammal, a necessity to pump blood all the way up to their towering height.

Strength, resilience, vision, and heart make great leaders, professionals, and entrepreneurs.

🔹 Strength: In business, strength isn't just physical. It's the ability to make tough decisions, protect what matters, and keep going when challenges arise. Just like a giraffe defending its young, leaders must stand firm in their values and fight for their teams, businesses, and missions.

🔹 Resilience: Giraffes don't let obstacles stop them. They adapt, move forward, and keep reaching higher. In sales, leadership, and business, resilience is everything. You'll face rejection, setbacks, and uncertainty, but your ability to stay the course determines success.

🔹 Vision: With their height, giraffes see farther than any other land animal. Great business leaders and professionals must also think ahead, anticipate change, and take a long-term view. Are you making decisions based on short-term wins or positioning yourself for sustainable success?

🔹 Heart: A giraffe's heart is massive—literally. But in leadership and business, heart represents empathy, authenticity, and a commitment to something bigger than yourself. The best professionals don't just chase success; they uplift others, build trust, and make an impact.

So, my love for giraffes isn't so weird after all. They are a daily reminder of the qualities I strive to embody in my career and life.
