Going Down the Rabbit Hole: The Realities of Career Pivots and Risk

"Going down the rabbit hole" is more than a metaphor; it’s a mindset. It’s what happens when you make the decision to pivot, to leap, to change, and you go all in.
I often speak with people, whether early in their careers or decades in, who are at a crossroads. They feel the pull toward something new. Something bigger. Something unknown.
What holds them back? It’s rarely just logistics. It’s about risk. More specifically, the ability and the willingness to take it. And these are not the same thing.
You can want to take the risk, but not be in a position to do so. Financially, emotionally, logistically.
You can have the means, but not the drive. Fear, comfort, uncertainty.
🚫 No exit strategy.
🚫 No plan B.
🚫 No “if this doesn’t work, I’ll just go back to...”
That kind of belief, that forward is the only direction, isn’t naive. It’s powerful. Because success doesn’t follow a straight path. It bends. It breaks. It reroutes. And through all of it, it demands: intensity, relentless drive, hard work and a support system that holds you up, even when you wobble.
If the answer is yes, then jump! The rabbit hole isn’t just a fall. It’s a journey. And it might be the most worthwhile one you ever take.
